True Solar Time: Why Your BaZi Chart Is Probably Wrong
Almost every free BaZi calculator asks for your birth time and quietly assumes the number on the clock is the number the sun agrees with. It usually isn't. For a large share of charts — and for nearly everyone born outside a time zone's central meridian — that assumption puts the hour pillar in the wrong place.
Clock time is a political convention
Standard time zones were invented for railways, not astronomy. A zone is a band of longitude that agrees, by law, to pretend the sun is doing the same thing everywhere inside it. The sun did not sign the agreement.
Solar noon — the moment the sun crosses your local meridian — moves by four minutes for every degree of longitude. One hour per fifteen degrees. Unless you were born almost exactly on your zone's reference meridian, the clock and the sun disagreed at the moment you were born.
BaZi hour pillars are defined against the sun. Each of the twelve earthly branches covers a two-hour block of solar time, with the 子 (Zi) hour centered on solar midnight. Feed clock time into that system and you are answering the right question with the wrong input.
How far off can it be?
Further than most people expect. China is the extreme case: the entire country runs on a single clock, UTC+8, referenced to 120°E — while the territory itself spans roughly 73°E to 135°E.

Someone born in Ürümqi at 8:00 AM by the clock was born at roughly 5:50 AM by the sun. That is not a rounding difference. It is the 卯 (Mao) hour instead of the 辰 (Chen) hour — a different hour pillar, a different heavenly stem, a different reading.
Three corrections, in order
Getting from a birth certificate to a usable chart takes three steps, and the order matters.
1. Undo daylight saving
If DST was in effect where and when you were born, the recorded time is one hour ahead of standard time. Subtract it first, before anything else.
This catches people out constantly, because DST history is messy and local. China observed daylight saving from 1986 to 1991 — a fact almost no calculator accounts for, and one that silently corrupts a whole generation of charts. Before 1949 China was divided into five time zones, so pre-Liberation charts need their own handling.
2. Correct for longitude
Take the difference between your birth longitude and your time zone's reference meridian, then multiply by four minutes per degree.
Chengdu: (104.1 − 120) × 4 = −63.6 minutes
East of the meridian, add. West of it, subtract.
3. Apply the equation of time
The earth's orbit is elliptical and its axis is tilted, so the sun runs slightly fast or slow against a uniform clock depending on the date. This is the equation of time, and it ranges from roughly −14 minutes in mid-February to +16 minutes in early November.
Fifteen minutes sounds negligible until you notice it lands on top of the longitude correction. A Chengdu birth in early November carries a −64 minute longitude shift plus a +16 minute equation-of-time shift; a February birth carries −64 and −14. That is a thirty-minute swing between two people born in the same city at the same clock time in different months — and hour pillars are only two hours wide.
Does this change your day master?
Usually not. The day master comes from the day pillar, and these corrections shift you within a day, not across days.
The exception is real and worth checking: if you were born within about two hours of midnight, a correction can push you into the previous or following day. That changes the day pillar, and therefore the day master, and therefore everything.
Two boundaries are involved and they are not the same thing. The calendar day rolls at midnight. The BaZi day rolls at the start of the 子 hour in true solar time. If your birth sits near either, the chart deserves a careful look rather than a default.

One question settles it: does it ask for your birth city, or only your time zone?
A time zone is a band up to fifteen degrees wide, and in China's case far wider. A calculator that only takes a zone cannot know your longitude and therefore cannot compute the correction. It is not being approximate — it is not doing the calculation at all.
Signs of a tool that handles it:
- Asks for a city or coordinates, and shows the longitude it resolved
- Displays the corrected time alongside the time you entered, so you can see the shift
- Handles historical DST rather than applying today's rules to a 1988 birth
- Flags births near the day boundary instead of silently picking one side
If a chart has ever felt subtly wrong to you — the hour pillar describing someone you don't recognize — this is the first thing to rule out, before questioning the system itself.
Frequently asked questions
I don't know my exact birth time. Does this still matter?
Less so. Without a reliable birth time the hour pillar is uncertain regardless, and the correction cannot rescue it. The other three pillars remain usable, and the day master is unaffected unless the birth was near midnight.
My hospital record shows a time. Is that reliable?
Treat it as approximate. Recorded times are often rounded to the nearest five or ten minutes, and are sometimes the time of paperwork rather than of birth. If your corrected time lands within ten minutes of an hour-pillar boundary, read both and see which one you recognize.
Does true solar time apply to Western astrology too?
Not in the same way. Western natal astrology uses the exact moment in universal time together with geographic coordinates, and the software resolves the rest. BaZi needs the explicit conversion because its hour system is defined directly against apparent solar position.
Is Local Mean Time the same as true solar time?
No, though they are often conflated. Local Mean Time applies only the longitude correction. True solar time — apparent solar time — also applies the equation of time. LMT gets you most of the way; the remaining difference can still reach a quarter of an hour.
